Farrar and Associates Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a psychiatric MD/DO and an APNP?

A: Both of these credentials indicate advanced medical degrees and the ability to practice and prescribe medications independently. MDs and DOs are doctors who have completed medical school, then a four year residency training program in the specialty area of psychiatry. APNP’s are Registered Nurses who have additionally earned a master’s degree or doctoral degree in a specialty area, and have passed National certification exams and state tests to earn the privilege to diagnose and prescribe medication.

Q: How do I get a new patient appointment?

A: We require a referral for new patients. This referral can be completed by a primary care doctor, OB-GYN, or therapist. Please see our referral tab for more information on how to obtain a referral.

Q: Why do I need a referral?

A: We want to ensure that we are able to meet the prospective patient’s needs and a referral helps us gather the information needed to evaluate this. This is also why we will review records from previous providers. We don’t  want patients to waste their time or money by attending an appointment only to learn that they need to be seen elsewhere.

Q: How long will my initial appointment be?

A: The initial exam is 60-90 minutes for both a therapy and a psychiatry appointment.

Q: How long will my follow up appointment be?

A: A psychiatry follow up is typically 25 minutes, while a therapy follow up is 50 minutes.

Q: How can I get a message to my clinician?

A: Calling the office or messaging through our secure patient portal are the preferred ways of getting a message to your clincian. General inquiries may be sent to contact@farrarmentalhealth.com. FAMH staff will respond to emailed requests through the patient portal or by phone due to the insecure nature of email communication.

If you decide to call, you will speak with either Marcy, Kate, Kathy, or Chris, who will relay the message to your clinician. They will then call you back with a recommendation from your clinician once your clinician has a chance to respond to the message.

Q: How do I make a payment?

A: You can pay through the patient portal, mail a check with your statement to Farrar and Associates, or call us over the phone with a credit or debit card.

Q: What is the No Surprises Act?

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. Learn more here.
